Learn about food management after stoma surgery.

Managing the foods you eat is an important part of a healthy lifestyle, especially while recovering from stoma surgery. This is especially true in the first few days and weeks after your operation.

Please note that if you suffer from other medical conditions, such as renal or cardiac problems or diabetes, or are taking medication, you should obtain additional dietary guidance from your doctor. Returning to a normal healthy diet is important following surgery, however, there are a few foods that may result in an increase odour, flatus, or risk of blockage. Please discuss dietary guidelines with your stoma care nurse.

Here are a few simple tips:

  • Enjoy small meals often
  • Eat more proteins (meat, fish, and dairy products)
  • Chew food thoroughly to avoid indigestion
  • If you have lost your appetite, simply eat foods that you enjoy
  • Listen to your body and pay attention to cravings

Again, consult with your stoma care nurse or healthcare team for specific diet and recovery recommendations based on your type of stoma surgery.
